Its surrounded by sea, to the south is Spithead and The Solent, to the east is Langstone Harbour, the west is Portsmouth Harbour. The island is seperated on its north side from the Hampshire coast by a narrow stretch of the sea that links the two harbours.
Although its only about 10 metres wide at its narrowest, and you could wade across at low tide if you were stupid enough to step into the thick mud, it means Pompey's ground is technically not on the mainland.
