After a race- when and how are connections paid?

The horse must first pass a drugs test. A urine sample is taken from every horse that has finished in a position to receive prize money (usually down to 6th place).
The samples take 15 days to clear the laboratorys and once they have been given the all clear the money is made available.
All owners/trainers/jockeys, etc have an account with Weatherbys - the racing admin people - and the money is paid directly into their Weatherbys account.

I believe that different tracks, different management/track owners, have their own way of doing things. At the local track, it was rather simple. If your horse finished in the top five, the horse's owner "picked up a ckeck" in 2-3 days after the race. If memory serves, 1st place was worth
50% of the purse, and 5th place received 5%.It was the owner's responsibility to give money to the trainer. By agreement, the trainer gets a percent of the purse money received, or a flat fee per race. It is also customary to "tip" the person who prepped the horse prior to the race, and cooled it down after. In some cases , this person might be the trainer. Of course if your horse wins, they'll expect a bigger tip!
Generally, the owner pays for all incurred expenses relating to owning a racehorse; feed, shoes, veterinary,stall space, etc.
Hopefully, your horse is ocassionally "in the money"
,and you frequently "pick up a check".
