Which swimming stroke or swimming exercise is best to work my stomach muscles?
I have been swimming 3-6 days a week for about 6 months Im toning up wonderfully but still have a gut on me which I would much like to be rid of while swimming.
Answers:
I would think most of them since when you push or pull your arms above your head or out in front of you..you are pulling on your stomach muscles.
I will vote for the back stroke though since you are pulling your arms above your head on your back and pulling upwards on your abs which will elongate them.
butterfly
Try the mermaid. Tough, but effective.
freestyle, other than cross country skiing it exercises more parts of your body than anything else, even your stomach if your stroke is right
this exercise is extremely good for love handles andlower tummy. Get in like a ring tube, and do circles in the water, using only the lower have of your body and rotate your hips in a circular motion.round and round and suck in the belly button as far as you cn go while you do it.. It makes you dizzy after awhile but its a really fun way and really really really works,, i promise, it worked wonders for me.Plus you dont have to feel guilty about eating a donut before you do it because you'll want to throw up when your done. LOL. no really, just close your eyes and lay back on the tube and relax, its a relaxing wonderful lower hip/tummy exercise.
anything swimming is good 4 u
definitely, freestyle

All swiming strokes tone up your stomach muscles. It's best to vary them because the abdomen has so many different muscles.
Backstroke uses your stomach muscles the most, although I would also recommend that you carry out abdominal exercises as well. Weight from this area can not be totally toned with swimming alone.
If you do the swimming strokes properly (i.e. am not one of these people who swim along with their head as high out of the water as possible) then all of them, but I have found breast stroke most effective at working the love handle type area, front crawl is very good for the back
Backstroke, because you move your arms backwards together with your feets, and that makes your stomach muscules to stay always tense in order to maintain your body up in the surface and avoid that your body make a V in the water.
Mabye it is not so noticeable, but try the Backstroke and focus on your stomach muscles you will feel that they are always in motion.
Hope to help.
*The best answer.* Get on your back in the water (as if you were going to swim backstroke) and then kick like you would if swimming butterfly. Don't pull with your arms, hold them over your head or hold a kick board, this is 100% kicking drill. You will know I am right after about 25 yards!

a good exercise to try is:
get in the shallow end of the pool. get down and dive out of the water like you were a dolphin with your head close to your legs as you come back down. Then when you get near the bottom of the pool have your stomach almost scrape the bottom as you come up to repeat the exercise. My abs always kill after doing this!!! Like water abs! good luck!
Try Sit kicks! They realy work your abs and hurt like hell, but realy tone you.
face the wall you are starting on and hold your kickboard out in front of you with your arms straight. lean back, and dolphin kick in a "sitting" position across the pool without letting your head go under the water. If it does not burn you are doing it wrong! Have fun!
for your stomach, fly
butterfly, that is
As well as swimming why don't you do a few toning exercising on your stomach out of water like sit ups
Butterfly.
they all tone up your stomach, just different parts with each stroke. butterfly does it fastest if the stroke is done correctly but breastroke does it just as good.
whatever is comfortable for you really
you can't rely on swimming alone. you MUST cross-train. i do drylands for a half hour before swimming. crunches are your best bet. i had the same problem you did and once i did a bunch of different crunches(to find different kinds just google them) NOW I HAVE ABS!!WOOHOO!!
