He's a defender, no he's a midfielder, i'm not sure he knows what he is, and thats the reason why he'll never step up to the level of a world class footballer, it's a difficult situation, Fergie is always changing him around and from the managers point of view it's good to have players that can do a job in more than one position and for the player he just wants to play. I know that's not really answered your question but it was a question that needed answering.

Started as a defender but over the last year he has played more in midfield in general.
Definately a defender first. Although in his first season at Man U he did play wide left of midfield a couple of times. He is a centre-back first off, then a wing-back (left or right) then , i suppose, a defensive-midfielder. He seems to do a better job there than Carrick anyway. I think maybe Fergie is experimenting alot with the midfield cos for the first time in a long time he has a fully fit defense. The midfield can be swapped about for Europe and the league and cup to keep opponents guessing.

He is basically a defender who from time to time is used in midfield. Basically he plays where Ferguson tells him to play.
He is what ever Sir Alex wants him to be! But its good for him to be so versatile for us! I personally think he is a better defender!
