Re-post of deore crankset question?

The crankset is a shimano deore hollowtech mega9 . currently working with a 7 speed cassette. i have aquired an xt 8 speed rear mech(derailier) and was wondering if the 8 speed mech is compatible with the 9 speed front crankset? obviously i'll need an 8 speed cassette to match. any help would be appreciated thanks

Answers:
Ok. The 8 speed cassette is wider than the 7 speed one so it wont fit on your freehub.(8 and 9 speed are the same width) You can use the rear mech with your 7 speed set up if you like without having to change the freehub, shifters, cables etc.
Ok, I think that the front crankset doens't care how many speeds you have at the rear. So if you have a Shimano Deore Hollowtec II, you can put whatever cassette and rear deraileur you want. But I really think that you'll need to change your shifters also.

What you need to change is:

chain
cassette
deraileur
shifters
(probably) cable
You can use your 8-speed mech on your current 7-speed setup fine.

You cannot use your 8-speed cassette on a 7-speed hub. Though there is a chance it's an 8/9-speed hub with a spacer on it, that's incredibly unlikely if it's the original wheel (7-speed hubs are cheaper).
If you're wanting to go up to 8-speed, you'll also need new shifters.

Your crankset's not bothered how many gears you run, so long as it's not too wide for the chain. 1,5,6,7 and 8-speed chains are all the same width. 9-speed ones are skinnier and 10-speed skinnier still. So a 9-speed crankset will work with any number of gears from 1-9.
