Celtic are probably so well known because they were created in 1888 to raise funds etc for the Irish Immigrants that had relocated to Glasgow's East End in the aftermath of the Potato Famine and other economic hardships of the mid 1800's. This cemented their strong connection (which persists to this day) with Ireland. The Irish have emigrated all over the world and have brought their love of football and particularly Glasgow Celtic with them. There are CFC Supporters Clubs in practically ever major (and not so major) city in the world. Their history has been detailed thoroughly by "evecfc1888".
Rangers, were created in 1873, and their fan base is majoritivly Protestant. They also have strong support within the Loyalist community of Northern Ireland. From what I can gather their supporters don't tend to travel to the extent that their rivals and maybe this is why they don't have the same globally known name as Celtic.
Maybe the Celtic fans are just friendlier, they do seem to get on with everybody when they travel, could this be why people remember them outside of Scotland and like to see them do well?
