What's the best tactics in badminton doubles?
Answers:
It depends on a lot of things.
Are you playing mixed or same sex doubles? Normally, in mixed the lady tends to go in front and the man at the back.
But that is rather sexist. I prefer the to play at the front, my wife prefers to play at the back. So my second answer is play to your strengths, if you are good at the front then go to the front.
When I play mens doubles, we normally go side by side to start with. But you do have to be flexible.
If a serve is a low serve then it is normal for the server to stay at the front. If it is a high serve, it is normal to retreat back to side by side.
And that is the same during the game. If you are attacking, eg a low one to the front or one to the backhand back of court, or a smash; you go front back. If you are receiving a smash or one to backhand back of court, then go defensive and side by side.
In our classes, when we get new players then they normally play side to side until they gain the experience. Its easier, i think.
But you do have to have a lot of flexibility. If you are playing side by side and your partner goes forward, then you go back and you play at the back. If then your partner comes back then you go side by side.
Its the person at the back that makes that decision. The are the ones that can see what their partner is doing, and they have to react accordingly.
It also depends on who you are playing. If you know the opponents weaknesses, you use that to your advantage.
But the main thing is to have fun. If you are enjoying the game, and like playing with your partner, then it doesnt matter what tactics you do.

usually depends on your style, its best to go one forward one back for a more attacking style, and one on each side for more defensive style. Free for all normally doesnt work
Ideally you and your partner need to support each other and go wherever is needed.
In general, when you serve, you will stay in front and your partner back. Stay in that formation and try to attack. When on the other hand, your team is being attacked, you have to adjust and often you have to move to side by side. It may not be completely balanced. You just have to fill in the gap. Hopefully you will regroup and go on the attack again in the front and back formation.
The key thing is not to get into each other's way and make your partner mad.
Good luck and have fun.
