brazilian jiu jitsu belt ranks and appox times to achieve them

whilte (n/a)
blue (1 to 2 years)
purple (3 to 5 years)
brown (5 to 7 years)
black (7 to 9 years)

i'd say how you advance is somewhat different per the instructor. the school my hubby attends, goes by attendance--which sucks imo. it goes by attendance because if you are there more your potential is higher. sadly my hubby works full time, runs his own school part time and has a family as well. he cannot physically make it to class as much as he'd like, so because of it his rank isn't as high as it could be. but his ft job allows him plenty of opportunity to study books and watch dvd's, online courses etc. so his skill level is way above his rank. he is an assistant instructor at that same school and submits all the students that are ranked higher than him simply because they attend every class--their skill level isn't even in the same league. nevermind that he has taken 2nd place in his first tournament (due to a miscommunication--he would have had 1st) and has taken 1st every tourn after that that he's competed in. so according the main instructor (old school gracie affiliate), yes he is very good at jiu jitsu, but he would have the potential to be even better if he came to class more.

keep in mind that you also accumulate stripes in between belts. you are tested and awarded stripes for your progress. (up to 4 stripes, before changing belts).

i have heard of instructors awarding stripes/belts for doing well in tournaments.
i have heard some will only award stripes/belts if you compete in tournaments.

my husbands school realistically wants him there twice a week (or more) which really isn't a lot, but just isn't doable for our situation.

i'm not sure the exact method my husband is gonna use yet.his school just opened.
jiu-jitsu has many different forms such as Brazillian,American etc. Each style is unique in its own right. The style, Si-fu [or teacher], and chain of command determine belts and advancement individually. Jiu-jitsu in itself is usually combined with other styles such as Kenpo etc. therefore falling to the ranking and advancement systems in respect to that particular style. Zax_Mom is 100% correct. Only thing I would say is when someone asks "How long does it take to get a black belt in BJJ?" the answer is usually "10 years".
I would say from experience that there are plenty of BJJ schools out there that you can get a black belt in less than 5 years. Trust me, I have seen plenty. Now a good school? doesn't focus on 5 or even 10 years.. its the time you put in and the knowledge you take away.. holding someone for 10 years to get a black belt is either to make tons of money off of them, or that they just are not improving to the next belt rank. usually its the first option..
you do gradings and then go up a belt the gradings get harder up to black belt jiu jutsu isnt as gd as inshinryu all the way
