There is a book you might like, that shares and explains this view, called, "The Only Game- Football in our Times" by James Walvin. It was first published in 2001, but still is very relevant if maybe the exact club data isn't the same.

Football is big business now it's naive to think there aint corrupt deals goin down every day. Even to the world cup levels no doubt some matches get fixed. One day this is going to blow up and just hope we don't all lose our faith in the game as we know it today.
