It's complicated.

Go here to get the straight story
1) Take the scores from the last 5 rounds of 18 holes played
2) subtract the course rating from the score earned on that course ( can be found on a score card)
3) Multiply each by 113
4) take the lowest of the 5 and multiply by 0.96 and you have your handicap
A Golf handicap is computed by a complex computer program that uses course rating and slope. Excluding the slope significance, which attempts to equalize very tough courses for other than the scratch golfer, here is how it basically works.

1) Take the scores from the each of the last 20 rounds played
2) Compute the differential by subtracting the course rating from your adjusted score
3) Average the 10 best differentials
4) multiply that average by 0.96 and you have your
handicap

Note the adjusted score is found by reducing certain score on holes where you scored more than two or three over par. 18 & less handicappers cannot count more that two over par on any one hole, No golfer regaeless of handicap an count more than three over par on any hole.

The course rating is dependant on the Tees you played and is usually indicated on the scorecard. If not ask at the pro shop.
a golfer plays 3 rounds. the scores for the 3 rounds are added up and divided by 3. if this final answer works out at 65 and the golfer was on a par 70 course his handicapp would be +5 as overall it has taken him/her 5 shots less to complete the course.
Hope this helps.

It's usually based on a golfers performances. They lodge their scorecards (usually 3 rounds) with the club secretary at the clubhouse & they are awarded a handicap.
Like everything else it is open to abuse but a cheat is usually found out fairly quickly. ie someone with a 28 handicap should be going round in 100 gross. If he suddenly enters a competiton & gets a nett 60, he's probaly a fraud. His handicap should enable him to play close to par (often 72)
