Sir Jack Hobbs (1882-1963) was England's premier batsman for over 30 years (1905-35), and along with Herbert Sutcliffe formed what may well have been the greatest opening partnership of all time. He has plundered more runs in Ashes tests than any other English batsman, only surpassed by Bradman in total, and is the most successful foreign batsman in both Melbourne and Adelaide. Indeed he excelled in Australia, in spite of Australia's well known vociferous pressure for visiting batsmen.
When an aging W.G Grace saw him play his first 1st class match, he quipped: "He's going to be a good'un." Known as "The Master" he was famous for surrendering his wicket after reaching his ton, to allow others to have a turn.
His "golden tour" of 1911/12 featured 8 centuries in Australia, including three in a row, a feat he repeated in 1924/25. He was a masterful strokemaker, and although preferring hard fast pitches, as most openers do, he seemed to also excel on green wickets. Oh, and he also missed four years of his test career whilst serving the British Empire with the RFC in the Great War.
