Which part of london should I stay in?
Ive won a hotel stay at any marriot hotel in the uk, and want to visit london. I would like to visit the natural History Museum and also go to a market to find some cheap clothes, shoes, handbags etc.
Also want to vitis oxford street, harrods etc. whats the best area to stay for getting around london, then I can check if theres a marriott nearby. Theres 26 in london, so should be fairly easy to find one, money is no object, as the prize is for wherever I want to stay. I dont know London at all, it is so big, I dont want to end up on the outskirts when I could have stayed nearer things.
Or is travel around london fairly easy anyway? Ive never been to London, I live in bristol, and our transport here is total crap,

Of those 26 few of them are "in" London. My choice in order would be.
Renaissance Chancery Court will be the easiest to get to the places you want to. Holborn station for Picadilly Line to South Kensington and the museums or Kightsbridge for Harrods or the Central Line to Oxford Street. Short walk to Covent Garden.
The Marriott County Hall should be able to have a room overlooking the Thames and Houses of Parliament. Next to the London Eye and a short walk to Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace. Short walk to Waterloo for the Northern Line to Camden for Camden Market or over Westminster Bridge to the District Line to South Kensington.
Park Lane is nearer physically to the museums and Oxford Street and you would have to catch a bus from their.

once you've mastered the tube its a breeze people forget to tell you about travel cards (all day travel) which ever is the nicest is my advice
Travellin around London is extremely easy. Just hop on the Tube and you'll be anywhere within minutes.
Natural History Museum is in Kensington, Harrods is in Knightsbride, Oxford Street is West End, and the best market for cheap clothes, shoes, etc. is Camden Market in Camden Town. All these places are very easily accessible wherever you are, so I'd just go for a really nice hotel. There's a really nice Marriot very near the London Eye.

Anywhere near an underground station would be ok, as the yrun regularly all day every day and is quite easy and cheap to get around on
Get yourself anywhere central - London is well-connected and you'll have no problem getting around on the Tube or buses (get a travel card covering all the zones you'll need, minimum 1 and 2). Given that you want to see such a range of places you'll be moving around whatever you do, so stick a pin in the map somewhere in the middle of it all and find the nearest Marriot to that.
The Marriot at Park Lane is near Oxford Street, Hyde Park (which has the Natural History Museum a walk away on the other side), and is a stone's throw from Marble Arch Tube.
I live in Greenwich which will take 20 minutes by underground to hit central london and 40 minutes by bus if you can stay in central london fine but the transport service is very regular so don't worry.
Hi, i suggest the Marriot in Swiss Cottage NW3 London. I used to live around the corner from there while I went to Uni. Its a very good area, only 35 mins walk to Oxford street or a 5 min underground ride to bond street which crosses oxford street and regent street. Swiss cottage is very nice, it is full of green space and one of the most picturesque parks in London - Primrose Hill and is very close by to Regents Park. It isn't close to the museum but being in Swiss cottage you would be very close to the Centre. Its easy to get an underground tube to Kensington to go to the Museum plus theres not too much else to see over there really. Swiss cottage is close enough to walk to many places of interest.
Travel around London is excellent; public transport is very good, as well as the tube there are lots of buses and your travelcard lets you use both. The Marriots at Park Lane, Grosvenor Square , Regents Park and Marble Arch are all close to Oxford Street and central London.
The Natural History Museum and other main museums are in South Kensington, and Harrods is nearby along Knightsbridge.
The most famous market is Portobello Road near Notting Hill in north Kensington. The nearest Marriott would probably be the one on Cromwell Road.
The ones at Holborn and County Hall are fairly central; County Hall is on the South Bank, good for the arts centres and galleries there. Maida Vale is less central. And the others are not central at all.

a market thats good to visit is camden market it has a huge selection. its on saturday and sunday(sunday is the most crowded day) on sunday you cannot go into the tube from 12-2 but you can exit from there.
i would pick somewhere fairly central as all your points of intrests are in the center. the transport on tube is fairly easy to use, buses however can be confusing. i think it would be good to stay in kensignton as there is a station there (glouster road) which is ideally suited on the tube line.
Don't let your experiences with Wirst buses in Bristol put you off buses in London.. L.O.L ! Yes, buses in Bristol are shite aren't they!
Those in London go everywhere at frequencies you can only dream of in Bristol - and you get a nice view from the top deck, which is more than you get on the tube which is claustrophobic and not really very nice. Just make sure you buy some kind of daily travelcard or 'Oyster' card (ask at Tube stations for details) otherwise it will be very expensive..
From what you say you want to do I'd go for a Marriot hotel around Kensington - I imagine there is one.
