How do I get back luggage confiscated at the airport security checkpoint?

Last Thursday at Gatwick airport my mother-in-law had a bottle of expensive champagne confiscated from her at the security checkpoint as there can be no liquids taken through the checkpoint according to the current security regulations, after British Airways failed to inform her at check-in that any liquids, etc must be stored in your hold luggage and not in your hand luggage.

Any ideas of how I can get this item returned to me?

Answers:
You can *try* calling the airport, but confiscated items are generaly just that - confiscated.

This is not British Airways' fault. The new regulations have been in place since August. Most airports also have numerous signs displayed that tell what is and isn't permitted. Really, there is no excuse to getting all the way to security without having some sort of inkling as to the rules. Sorry. She may just have to write this off as a lesson learned and she'll have to make sure to check the rules and restrictions *before* leaving for the airport from now on.
Try lodging a complaint.well thats what my uncle did when he "lost" his luggage..when you lodge a complaint they return you the item , "if" located and if they can't, they give some kind of compensation (mostly money). Lodge complaint in the airport that it was confiscated in.
with a lost item its different than a confiscated item. generally when your item gets confiscated at the gate some1 keeps the item or it mysteriously disappears
No Chance!..the airport staff need to get their goodies in for christmas.
perks of the job! lol
Contact the Airport, mind you doubt if you will get it back.
Check lost items.
charlie you cant really blame BA although i have no affection for them but it was and is widely reported that all liquids must go in hold. Anyway get straight on to them and claim for the champagne and if mislaid then ask for monetary compensation
Nope! Thats been destrroyed without doubt. NO liquids of any form, unless bought Airside, can be take aboard. (see regulations on tickets/web/outside terminal/at checkin/at security. Confiscations are put into a skip lorry and delivered to landfill sites.
Once you surrender an item and proceed to your flight without it, you're out of luck. Your expensive champers is gone!
I suppose she didn't think all of the signs, repeated speaker announcements in the terminal, and media coverage were intended to include her?

You mother in law should accept responsibility for her ignorance and an expensive lesson learned.
Too late..we already drink, drank, drunk it all that night after we got off duty. Thanks, The Security Crew at Gatwick!
you should tell them at the point of confiscation that you want it back when you return
