i always pre book hun
You sound like the uncertainty will make you edgy so best pre-book for that reason alone. There are always taxis available. They are fast drivers in my experience but safe! Sure you will be fine, and Paphos is lovely.
I went to Paphos in '95 and the taxi rides from and back to the airport are probably my strongest memories of the place. I'd heard all sorts of reports about bad driving over there but it truly has to be experienced to be believed.
There were only 4 of us going to and from the airport so we were provided with a taxi instead of a coach, the driver was probably in his early fifties so you would have thought he wouldn't push his old Mercedes to the max around mountain roads but not a bit of it; he was an absolute nutter and so was the guy who took us back!!
Whilst in Paphos the hotel always had the local news on in the reception area and not a night went by without a serious accident being reported.
I'd recommend being brave and don't hesitate to ask your driver to slow down. Either that or hire your own vehicle, they drive right hand drive cars, same as us, so it's really easy and at least you're in control of how fast you're going.
Having said all that it's a great place to see so hope you enjoy your travels.
Tip: Get a jeep and explore the Akamas region. Check out Tombs of the Kings (just off main road between old and new Paphos towns)
Depending on how far your hotel is from Paphos airport if it is in Paphos the airport is about 10/15 mins away from the main resort. I am only back from there and the taxi are not cheap about £5 cypriot pound for not even a five minute car journey but i'm not sure if pre booking it would be cheaper dont know about the exchange rate from sterling but from euro that is about €8.50/£6.70
nice place though have a nice holiday
