Hiring a car abroad?
Can I hire a car without a Credit Card ? Will a Debit Card do ?
Answers:
I lived in Europe for 6 months and can absolutely assure you that there is no consistent answer to this question!
Here's why:
*Car companies (Avis, Hertz, etc) have different policies for this, even here in the states. Often overseas, they are operated by an idependent agency, so it further complicates this.
*Your bank may or may not be equipped to communicate with the agency for authorization. Even if the car company wanted to help you, the card may be declined.
*EVEN IF you talk with your bank before leaving, this may happen. (It happened to us THREE times, even with a note on our folio).
A great option might be to work with an major agency and pay IN PERSON while still in the US. Then, you'd at least have some recourse.
Good luck!
what country and card? Most plaves will accept anything
I know for sure that it works with a debit card in Australia
If your are using a U.S. issued debit card with a MasterCard or Visa symbol. Yes, you should be able too. However, they may put big holds on the account and it could take up to 7 days or more to clear.
Some may not work because it would go over your daily authorization limit
In the U.S. Some won't take those debit cards. The accept all card rule does not apply in the U.S. but does internationally
You will need to notify your bank that you will be using your card outside of the country. This way your bank knows to expect unusual transactions. Some bank also require the card to be activated for international transactions.
When I go to Europa, I go true travel agency and rent a car.
It's included with your plain ticket price, and is less expansive.
You can pay it how you want to,but if you have a debit card
it should have Visa or some other logo .depends on which
bank you are with. You can also use it to pay for things so
you don't have to Cary to much cash and if is last or stolen you should get your money back. Cao !! Lady from Croatia !!
