What's the best sandy beach near to Penarth in South Wales some proper sand? It's a long drive to Gower!
All the ones I've found are rocky or covered in rubbish, surely there's somewhere nearer than Gower or Pembroke to go for a walk on a proper beach

Ogmore is more Bridgend way than Gower way and still rocky, but Rest Bay is stunning and quiet (Porthcawl,well away from Coney beach) and also Southerndown is spectacular but you get a lot of surfers.
Ogmore-by-Sea is very pleasant. And Porthcawl is not far past it. I think these are about 25 miles from you.
if you go off the beaten track in barry island there is a small beach area the other side of the old harbour wall (saying that the main beach is a lot better since i lived there 15 years ago)
failing that, try aberthaw or ogmore a bit further down the coast
My favourite beach down that way is the one beyond the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr. If you don't want to spend an hour trecking across the dunes to get to the beach, head for Porthcawl and then head for the caravan park. Just before you get to the caravan park (Trecco Bay), turn left and drive towards the sea. You should come to a place just in front of the beach where there is space to park. Park up and you can get straight onto the beach. Head left on the beach (as you are looking towards the sea) and you have a really long beach to walk along towards the estuary at Ogmore. This summer, when we were scrabbling around in the rock pools on this beach, we found two tiny baby starfish (each about the size of a small pea). Loads of lovely shells and driftwood on this beach too.
