New York
As I understand it, New York is much safer these days.
15 years ago I was pelted with stones thrown by kids in the Bronx.
Just stay away from tall buildings on Tuesday mornings in September.
never ever stray into
QUEENS
it will be torture
It depends on what you do and don't like and your budget.

If you are skint don't stay in the Ritz!
Why not Chinatown?
The Bronx and Queens could be dodgy, Central Park after dark likewise. Consult The Rough Guide to New York, its in most public libraries.
What's wrong with Chinatown (are you scared of egg foo yung?)

Any neighborhood in New York is safe if you use a bit of COMMON SENSE - and, if you don't know how to act, you can be the victim of a crime in ANY neighborhood!

It's really simple - don't wander around by yourself late at night, don't flash a lot of cash, and try to find out where you're going before you get there (that is, ask for directions at your hotel or whatever) so you're not wandering around in a fog looking like you don't know where you're going..

Just use some common sense, and you'll be safe anywhere in our city
Anything west of 8th Ave in mid-town, neighborhoods change very fast and often in NYC, If it starts not to feel right, back out, don't keep going. NYC has changed a LOT, mostly because of Giuliani cleaning up the homeless, You don't see it as soon as you get off the train, stepping over passed out urine soaked bodies. They were all moved to 11th ave (don't go there either). In the 80's there were coalitions for the homeless, liberal lawyers fighting for them for free to stay on the streets, Giuliani gets in and clears them all out of mid town, The homeless advocates cried "UNFAIR, they have rights", Giuliani fires back " SO DO THE 15 MILLION TAX PAYING NEW YORKERS HAVE RIGHTS" and now 42nd st is owned by Disney, I remember so many porn theaters there, that they had to slant the marquee's to see them all. A much better place now, really cleaned up., Thanks Rudy !
yes you are right about staying there, not a good place to be stay chelsea
Chinatown is great. Great food, fun shopping. Queens and Brooklyn have some amazing neighborhoods that shouldnt be missed. As long as you act like you know where you are going and try not to stick out and throw cash and jewlery around everything should be ok. northern central park in the middle of the night might not be the best idea. But in general, you're fine pretty much anywhere you go.
avoid every and any ghetto in new york city and you should be fine
