You can pack you snow board or other fragile stuff in a normal case and send it through, but if it gets scraped, bumped dented, or otherwise damaged you cant claim.

hold baggage is normally squishy, stuff that can be thrown by the baggage handelers without fear of damage.hold all with clothes is typical

if you want your precious snow board to get special treatment you need to pay for it.
