How long is the british isles coastline?

Answers:
Infinite !

It all depends on the level of detail you want (think about it)

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/uk_coastlin.

twice the distance fron the middle
I can't remember, but the interesting thing is that it is 3.2cm shorter measured clockwise than anti-clockwise.

Why? The curvature of the earth, plus the rotation around the Sun compress the land slightly thus reducing the distance. Imperceptible to the human eye but significant over this kind of distance.

Of course this effect is reversed (ie. shorter anti-clockwise) in the southern hemisphere.
Very very long.
500 miles
I was watching the BBC documentary series Coast, and the presenter said research had found it to be 72,000 miles.

Hope this helps
