Where's a good place to go for a white Xmas for a poor backpacker?

My friend and I are from NZ and currently working in England. We would love to have our first white xmas this year but everywhere is sooo expensive! Any suggestions?

If you're going to Scotland, then get up to the Isle of Skye - it's beautiful. I've been in both the height of summer and the depths of winter and completely different but both times beautiful. You can always go back to Edinburgh for New Year's Eve.

Berlin for the Xmas markets is great (I'm going for the 2nd year in a row - you can get cheap RyanAir flights and can hostel it once you're there. If you get there, make sure you check out the Old Town Spandau market as well as the ones in the centre of town (metro ride away).
Try Ben Nevis. Very cheep. Good views. Go on. Give it a go.
Go as far north in Scotland as u can...worth a try!
Scotland, guaranteed snow
Anywhere in the North of Scotland, you can't always rely on snow in the South. Go to www.visitscotland.co.uk and click on Highlands and Skye. It gives you information on places to stay and whats available in that area. You could do a city break in Aberdeen or stay in a hostel in the countryside. Bonus is that the Scots are lovely friendly people and they really know how to have a party!
If you are in the UK and on a budget you need to stay there rather than travel overseas, so the highlands of Scotland or Wales are going to be your best bet for snow and the east coast tends to be colder than the west due to the gulf stream.

With this in mind you should be heading to eastern Scotland, somewhere like the Cairngorms, for the best chance of snow. Plenty of hostels in the area and camping is cheap of course but you will need a decent sleeping bag.

If you can get overseas the Ardenne in the south of Belgium has enough elevation to normally get some snow at Christmas and is not too far away. But the only way you are going to guarantee snow is to get to the Alps, cheap deals are available via bus and hostels, France is probably the cheapest alpine country but anywhere is going to be more in the holiday season.
Probably cheaper to go to Czech Rep. or Hungary for a white Xmas rather than UK. Prague is fantastic in the snow - was there in January and it was amazing - real crisp white snow, fairytale buildings-Charles Bridge, the Castle on the Hill. I have heard Budapest is also lovely. You should check out deals on one of the travel sites like lastminute.com, travelocity or expedia.com
You can rarely guarantee snow in the UK
Siberia is cheep but the Christmas is not on the 24th
