Looking to stay at a real nice hotel in central Amsterdam in October - want something quite reasonably priced?

Answers:
The Tulip or The Marriot.
But if you want a proper taste of Amsterdam; stay at the Flying Pig Hostel. Yes it's a hostel, but you can have a private room. A great way to meet fellow visitors to Amsterdam. But then again it depends why you're going to Amsterdam; Travel? Business? Break?
The Eden Rembrandt just off Rembrandt Square. I stayed there 3 weeks ago and would definitely recommend it (definitely one of the better hotels in Amsterdam). I booked through easytobook.com and got quite a good deal.
All depends what you mean by reasonable price and where you want to stay, I like the Lloyd but its a little out of town, the College hotel is more central and is the training hotel for the local hotel school, so offers great value.

Check out my favourite hotel website for Holland, it has unusual places that are not part of chains http://www.weekendhotel.nl

If you want a chain hotel there are many to choose from http://www.bookings.nl/ does the more usual stuff.
Rho Hotel, just off of Dam Square is really nice, reasonably priced. and they do a wonderful breakfast! We stayed there twice and both times were very pleased with the service.
www.vrbo.com is a great cheap lodging website
