No. If you are an American you don't need a permit for Thailand.

Looks like you do need one.
Go and look at
www.thaiconsul.co.uk.
It seems you do not need a visa, but will need to pay an entry fee of around £16 on arrival, and can stay fro up to 30 days. Will need to hav a return ticket, and sufficient funds to support you through your stay.
No permit needed, research your destination thoroughly! I was there last summer, but i'm a seasoned traveller! IT's a mad, fun place, enjoy. Keep your eyes open there's lots to see
No u do not need a visa for upto 30 days, though u do need a forwarding ticket, and dont listen to the bird who says u have to pay £16 on entry, she must be on drugs..
If you want to stay longer, u can go to the british embassy in wireless road and get extensions on ur visa,
dont forget to keep 500 Baht for your airport tax, when u leave the country ..
And make sure u dont get bummed, by a lady boy . unless of course thats what ur into,,,
Have a great time, its a great country . though bkk, is getting some what expensive now.
If you both have British passports, you do need a visa, but you apply on arrival. You'll get a form given to you on the plane so don't forget your pen. You get 30 days (I think) - just hand it in with your passport when you go through passport control. Oh, and it's free.

However, as stated elsewhere, departure tax for Thailand is not included in your air ticket price and will have to be paid when you leave the country.

Have a fab time!
If you are a UK passport holder you DO NOT need a visa for travel and entry to Thailand for 30 days. Your passport with six months remaining is good enough. What you will need to do is pay a 500 baht per person charge when leaving Thailand. This tax is not incorporated into the price of your ticket so make sure you keep that money for when you depart. (It's about GBP 7.15 each). I hope this helps.
The Thai government provide a 30 day entry pass on arrival.

However, most airlines will not let you board unless you already have a visa. So if you are travelling by air, you must have one.
I would check with the airline to be sure, but I know that Thai Air and British Air insist on a visa.
