If i travel to south india in october, am I going to get soaking wet?

I'm flying to Mumbai on 7 October, and I want to head down inland through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu then up the Kerala coast as October winds down, finishing off in Goa before coming home on 1 November.

I thought I was avoiding the main monsoon, but my friends now tell me a second wave may ruin my trip. Should I just bite the bullet and head north from Mumbai, not south?

Answers:
The rainy season on the west coast of India is from June to September. On the eastern board, monsoon arrives about 2-3 months later and can stretch till December first week. Rains on the east coast (cumulative rainfall annual) are not as heavy as on the West. I would say, there's a 30% chance of moderate rainfall and less than 10% chance of your getting soaking wet at any place.

Do travel south from Mumbai. Its the best time to travel. You will find the place very green after the rains. The weather is also pleasant.
Oct should be pretty safe in south. esp west coast. so if you want beach , mountains nature head south. for architecture head north. be ready for heat.
Head north or south, the months of October and November are considered rainy season, generally for the whole of India. Usually rains begin later part of October or early November and lasts upto late November. Preferably you should plan your trip in early October or, if possible, wait until early December when the rains would have ended and the cooler (winter) season begins.
You can travel in North India. Targeting Himachal Pradesh.

Delhi - Simla - Kulu - Manali - Rohtang is very popular itinerary.
