Is it possible to use a UK debit card in South Africa?
I'm traveling to ZA soon, and the only bank card I have is switch/meastro. have any one used switch in ZA?
Answers:
I worked for a bank in South Africa and now in the UK. I know that you can use your debit card anywhere. There isn't a chip and pin is SA, but they will swipe it in the machines. You will be charged a service fee by your bank each time you use it, depending on the bank you are with. I know Nationwide does not charge for withdrawals anywhere in the world.
Remember, anywhere you see the Maestro sign, which is just about everywhere.
Keep your card safe, in restaurants, don't give it to the waiters and let them go off with it. If you have to, follow them. Will save you millions. Criminals in South Africans are just as up to speed as the rest of the world. Be cautious. Wish I were you, its summer over there now, so have lots of fun in the beautiful beaches.
Enjoy SA!
Yes you can - you can use them worldwide xx

yes you can i used mine in SA
You can but you will get charged every time you do.
You kind of loose out twice as the conversion rate will change each day & the bak charges you for using the card abroad
Yeah everytime I go home (South Africa) I always use my debit cards (HSBC and Halifax). They work in any cash machine in South Africa. My wife uses NatWest debit card and is also widely accepted. For every transaction they will charge a little convertion fee, about a Pound, that's all. Using your card on cash machines is much more cheaper than converting your cash at Foreign Exchange.
hi m8 i could use my card in iceland but got charged £10 to with draw money from my account best check with the bank. but have a great time.
Yes you can but if you do then try to be in a shopping mall etc. Criminals hang around the Hole in the Wall and pretend to be assisting or maybe follow you and rob you. Be very, very careful in that Country. The wild animals are not only in the Parks but in the streets as well.
The majority bans here will honour maestro cards
the majority of ATM's carry the switch/maestro logo's, as do the larger shops & restaurants etc.
You shouldn't have any problems at all. When I travel to the UK I can use my switch/meastro card(s) in the atm's there with no worries.
