To get to Whitby, North Yorkshire from London the choices are:
1) Flight from Heathrow or Gatwick to Durham-TeesValley Airport, then get the Train from Middlesbrough to Whitby.
2) GNER Express train from London to York, then catch the YORKSHIRE COASTLINER 840 Bus Service direct to Whitby (2hrs.. and you usually end up with a stiff back and **** afterwards)

3) GNER Express Train from London to York, then catch a local Service from York to Scarborough, then catch the #93 ARRIVA Bus from Scarborough to Whitby. note it takes the A171 Moors road which often gets blocked due to Accidents at either the Flask Inn or at Pond Hill.. and ARRIVA buses aren't always that reliable, their drivers have been known in the past to push on a bit along that road (been tail-gated several times). and the price rises for local services here are almost beyond a joke (£1.30 to go 1.8miles into town, when was only about 76p a few years ago)
4) GNER Express Train from London to Darlington, then Catch a local Service from Darlington to Middlesbrough and onto Whitby.
5) By Car: A1/A1(M) from London to M1(?) Junction45 onto the A64.. follow it past Tadcaster, York then Malton. Join A169 to Pickering (look for sign-posts to Eden Camp, and go past it).. Straight on at Pickering Roundabout, continuing up the A169.. and several near vertical hills later (including the infamous "Blue Bank" down into Sleights) it'll spit you out at the Junction of the A171 Whitby to Middlesbrough Road (turn right at the roundabout, then straight on at the next one past the petrol station to get into Whitby).

When you're coming from London, the nearest station is in Saltburn, I think, and that's about half an hour away from Whitby. If I remember correctly, you need to go from Kings Cross to Darlington or Middlesborough and then change.
It's a nice place and the fish and chips are fab. And you must visit the Abbey if you are a fan of Dracula.
By rail: King's Cross to York; York to Scarborough; Scarborough to Whitby (but I wouldn't recommend it - cost and time!) Coach: National Coach Network - give them the route, they'll make the bookings/connections (cheaper but takes a bit longer). Mix the two - coach to Scarborough then local transport to Whitby. If you do go, be sure to visit Nelson's smokehouse for the absolute best kippers in The World!! 'The Magpie' fish and chips ARE good but sometimes the queue is not worth it: the Shepherd's Purse is an interesting eaterie.
