Thanks guys.

I've travelled in India a few times and these are the gadgets I wouldn't travel without:
A maglite torch - they are compact and come in funky colours can be used as a lamp, there are loads of power cuts in india so invaluable - even the key ring sized ones are good.
Those plug-in mosquito things - they work well and the ones you buy out there smell horrible.
Decent padlock - for luggage whilst travelling and your room when you're not.
Money belt - sadly security an issue and best to keep cash, passport, travellers cheques on your body when moving about.
Heating element: to boil a cup of water.
And even more boring:
A piece of string and some pegs to use as washing line.
Spare batteries.
Decent hair conditioner.
None of these are very exciting I know but very very useful - what a thoughtful friend you are!
Water purifier, I know its abit boring but the water can make you very very ill.
When my boyfriend went to India,I packed him a goodie bag filled with snacks, mints,'Brush aways' (disposable tooth brushes),cooling foot spray,a small tin of vaseline (in case of chapping as it was so hot),and insect repellant. Apparently all was put to good use!
My mate from Bodmin Moor took a suitcase full of Cornish pasties in case he didn't like the food!
Immodium tablets and a recipe for quick rehydration formula (3 parts salt to one part water)
mosquito net, torch, water purifier pills.
Definately water purification tablets, possibly a mosquito net, padlocks for their rucksacks and DEET moquito repellant.. sorry but Mauritius it aint. also you might want to pay for some travel vaccinations for them!!
