Thanks for your enquiry about the statues above the doorway ar the former Great/North Western Hall.

I've been able to find something about them.

The figures were executed by a firm called Farmer and Brindley of London. Their height is 254 ckm (8' 4") and they are made of stone. They are described in a book called The Public Sculpture of Liverpool by Cavanagh as "Allegorical Female Figures". There is a description of the statues in this book. You could take a 10p photocopy of the page (page 87) if you came over to the Library. Page 328 has a few notes about Farmer and Brindley. It is suggested that the figures represent Europe and America.

However on page 4 of a book called "Well, I never knew that" ( vol2) there is more information which is worth a look. The author of the book believed they were two Greek goddesses, Athene and Artemis. He has seen two identical figures on a building in Malta. There, Artemis was called America and Athene was called Europa. This fits in with Cavanagh's interpretation.

Hope this helps.
