Anyone from Japan? - What would you want?
We will be staying with two Japanese families on our holiday to Japan next year. We would like to take gifts for these families but have no idea what to give - we understand that Japanese people like traditional English things (we are from Britian). - so does that mean Shortbread biscuits, beefeater toys, jam etc? What do you recommend or what would you like?
Answers:
I live in Japan and my wife is Japanese but I am a foreigner.
It is nice to bring traditional things from your country - the things you mentioned would be perfect. Whisky is another possibility. Japanese also love wearing clothes with English written on it - it makes absolutely no difference what is written on it (I saw a young cool guy on the train tody and he was wearing a shirt that said "Women's Curves" written in pink) but a famous sports team t-shirt or sweatshirt would be very much appreciated, and makes a suitable gift for younger members of the family (if you are getting that specific.)
Also, it does not hurt to bring extra gifts (maybe a few extra packages of the shortbread biscuits) for unanticipated meetings etc. The Japanese are like hobbits in that they do lots of gift-giving!
A japan god statue
A hamper of traditional British foods i.e. Marmite, jam, marmalade, tea, cakes etc, etc. (Sorry I am not from Japan).
