Driving indepentently in south america.Buying a vehicle in chile.?

I am retiring shortly and I want a 3 year bird watching tour of south america. Has anybody done long term touring with a purchased vehile in south america.

Answers:
Yep, been there, experienced that (apart from the bird watching - although happened to see some condors). You want to buy a 4X4 to manage with all the pot-holes in those Chilean roads, they're atrocious. Also look out for maniac "Micro" (small bus) drivers and horse&cart drivers, last thing you want to do is have a prang with one of them.
I have spent about 6 years out of the last 15 working in various South American countries. Love it down there, but i wouldn't drive amongst those maniacs for anything. I spent 7 mos. in Chile and one of the highlights was the night tha van driver drove 8 blocks down the sidewalk because the street was blocked.
