Answers:
10 years old? That's nothing compared to what I used to drive. In 1998 I was driving a 1976 Chevrolet Custom 30, and from Durban, my work would take me to places like Margate, Portshepstone, Pietermaritzburg and Richard's Bay. I never got stuck on the road.
* Drain the old oil and put fresh one.
* Make sure your tyres are in good condition.
* Do a wheel balancing on each tyre so that your tyres don't bounce on the road.
* You might as well check the wheel alignment before you start your journey.
* Have a good spare wheel, wheel spanner, and that thing for lifting up the car (I don't know its name)
* Check if your fan belt needs changing
* In the radiator, mix water with anti-freeze liquid.
And.then..GO!
Oh! Don't forget to take condoms with you.
depends how far far is for you. for me far is from dorset to london (about 200 miles) lol!
Nothing that you should have been doing regularly all along.
check oil water and all fluid levels
check tyres for wear and tear and the correct pressure
have the serviced
put petrol in it check oil and water
Oil change, tire pressure, and coolant check
check all fluids
do any service that is coming due: oil change, belt change, transmission fluid
check all belts
check tires & replace if needed
make sure you get a full tune up and check all your tires. Some places at midas have a check list that is specific about long trips so they will know what to look for!

have fun!!
take it in for a service and be on the safe side
New fluffy dice, new compilaton CD, crisps and biscuits. The essentials.
check your oil and water, tyre pressure and make sure your spare is in good condition
the same thing you should be checking weekly (if not daily) no matter what age your car is
check oil, water, fuel, lights, tyres (pressure and tread), brakes If any thing goes wrong take to garage do regular servicing but if car does you alright everyday should do you for your trip but watch for overheating and anything mecahanical happening and take spare water and spare tyre aswell as a jack / tools etc just in case
even though its in good running order ,you obiously dont trust it ,so get one you do trust
well just the normal things like oil, water, tyes condition as well as presure, all your lights, screen washer fluid, condtion of your wipers, and of course FUEL. enjoy your trip..
Take it for a full service at a reputable mechanic, then the least you can do is make sure that there's petrol, iol and water in your car.And remember to check you tyre pressure-always(especially on a long trip in the hot South African sun).Good luck!
get a full tune up
check the following:

1. battery
2. tyre pressure (the spare too) and tread, if they need changing do it!
3. windscreen wipers
4. check oil and water and change if needed
5. if your car is due for a service, get one done.
