Americans: why do your restrooms have big gaps down the sides of the doors?
I have been to America 4 times and every time I am baffled by the fact that the doors on your toilet cubicles have gaps down each side, which makes a very personal visit to the lavatory, rather public! I find it embarrasing. Is there a reason for it? The restrooms at the airports are the worst for it, but i found it like that in a lot of other places. Also the cubicle doesn't go very near to the bottom of the floor, but just past the top of the toilet. There is no privacy. what is going on?
Ps Apart from the restrooms, America is wonderful, have loved my holidays there and can't wait to go back. New Orleans was amazing ( oct 06) they are up and running and ready for buisness and need tourists so get yourself along there!)

I am an American and I honestly think it's because it is cheaper that way. I just went to Europe (specifically Spain) for the first time this September and yeah, I noticed that all of the bathrooms there are like an actual tiny room with a full-length door. But here in America, it's not like that, I guess except for some expensive restaurants. The restroom stalls here require less materials and it's easier to construct. Although it is less personal, it is safer than you think. I've actually learned not to "stare" into the gaps between the restroom stalls. I just do a quick glance to see if there is anyone inside. If I see something dark or something moving, that means it's occupied. This way, rapes are less likely to happen too.
They have to make sure that nobody's having sex in the stalls. Or shooting drugs. Or doing any of a hundred other illegal things.
Lesbians like to look, so they made it that way.
Americans love to sneak a peak.
It is not just america, it is all over. Caribbean too. Blame the manufacturers, not the country itself.
i hate that.i can't even go to the bathroom unless no one else is in there..i just don't like using public restrooms in general.
Cost. you see those things cost a lot of money, and people abuse them so they have to be repaired and replaced often. So they are built inexpensively and to provide just enough 'privacy'.
Cost. The parts aren't anywhere close to each other, so the wear and tear is less.
Its called peek a boo !
You know, now that you've pointed that out, I realize it is sooo true everywhere. Schools are very bad about that, no privacy. My kids won't even use the restroom at their public schools. I hate it when little kids crawl under the stalls, there is plenty of room for them to do that. But yeah, those cracks are SO wide.
You know what happens in restrooms. That way, people can see if anything bad's happening. I went in a loo on the beach front on Shelter Island, San Diego, and the cubicles didn't even have doors! Not surprising that I was the only one in there!
Because we like to play Peek a Boo! lol
Good question.I hate that. I don't know why its like that though, but get this..at my school we don't even have locks on the doors! But, I think that's just my school..hmmmm
