What is the best currency to take to the Gambia Sterling or Euros?
Answers:
Probably Sterling. There are a few ATMs at tourist spots but they are prone to run out of money quite regularly. Be careful about using credit cards even with major hotels; there have been quite a few scams. Make sure you use the hotel safe facilities and only carry the minimum amount of money with you when you go out. On another note: DO make sure you take anti-malaria precautions (tablets, sprays etc) as the West African version of malaria is not very nice. Only drink water from bottles that have been presented to you with unbroken seals. In the Banjul area, one of my favourite restaurants is "Scala" run by a charming Danish lady. (No, I don't get any commission.) Enjoy.
STERLING you can take euros but the Gambian Bureau de Change prefer hard cash, don`t forget you may need to take a fiver with you as a tax on entering the country unless your travel company has included it in the price of your holiday, Use Hotel safes where possible there are still some light fingered people around mostly tourists!
Sterling or dollar are the best currencies to takes seeing as the Sterling is fully convertible. Most travelers checks are denominated in pounds. The state deparpment suggests dollar. But Pounds are easier and have more buying power. They have more pounds considering they do more trade with England. Trust me my parents are from Nigeria, take sterlings you get more bargaining power with them b/c they are woth more!
