When people say they are going to Hong Kong it usually means Hong Kong Island or Kowloon. If you want to get a flavour of HK then you will only need to stay at week at most. Generally cost of living is high, linked to housing costs but there are bargains to be had. Haggle at Stanley market and if you can visit with a local who has a HK ID card then you will get better discount.
