It could be anything but thereis some weird rule in Britain where anything washed up on the shore belongs to the Queen but if she doesn't want it, it belongs to the person who found it. So basically, whatever it is, if you pick it up, it's yours cos I don;t think the Queen would be too bothered. So pick it up and have a look.
Report it to the Coastguard.

if you do report it to the police you will have endless grief and forms to fill in - also ugly people shouting at you with bright lights shining in your eyes - you could well end up charged with something - I would just forget I saw anything.

It's Brighton, that kind of thing happens all the time. Wait until you hear about a dead body being found in the water to tell people about it.
It might be something perfectly Innocent. Such as a smuggled thermonuclear device. Nothing to worry abou.. THERMONUCLEAR DEVICE? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHH! LET ME OUT!
Best to contact the coastguard or the police. Could be something completely innocent but these days you never know..

could be some kind of lobster pot, but if you are worried call the coast guard
its proberly just a lobster pot but I would tell the coastguard if you are concerned.
It might cause you loads of grief, but if it was me, I would have to report it - and now!
I would have thought that if it was legitimate, the Coastguard would already know about it. If they have to launch an investigation then you will know that you did the right thing.
Go for it - and let us all know how you got on!
Probably a box of shite for somebody to sell at exorbitant prices in all those 'delightful little alleys'. On the other hand, ....
It's not drugs, it's a new illegal immigration route. Fifty feet beneath the waves there is a tunnel leading to the town centre....

yes - it could be drugs - that is a common way to drop them off - or worse it could be a weapon for use by terrorists . If someone dumps a box then there is something of worth in it to dump to box
