Why is a boat or ship always termed as a 'she'? As in 'she sails in the morning'.?

Answers:
it's not just ships but all mechanical transportation.goes back to war times when man had no one else to baby but theire vehicles
The term she came from Ralph O'Shea sailor?? or it is said to be .O'..she..a "she"
When she gets into port she heads straight for the buoys ;o)

Seriously, I think it's because the figure heads were usually female.
"A ship is always referred to as "she" because it costs so much to keep her in paint and powder."
Taking a guess here: Maybe it was because it was considered bad luck to have a woman aboard a ship, so men took to calling the ship a she to replace the woman figures in their lives?

Sailors, especially pirates, can be considered "married" to their work, right?
There were lots of lonely men and mighty few women aboard ship in the early days of sailing. Those sailors couldn't afford to refer to their fellow sailors as a she, so instead the ship became the she for all of them.
It's not just a boat.. even a country termed as 'she'. This is mother nature..
Well its like this, as for Ships, Id rather navigate she than he ! as for cars Id rather drive she than he ! as for motor cycles Id rather ride she than he ! Get it, Got it Good ! LMFAO !
The answer is because a Captain of a boat was always suppose to be loyal to their ship and their ship only it was almost as if they were married, and because back then Homosexuality was a no no, he had to be married to a woman (also you never had women on ships let alone female captains) thus boats were always referred to as women.
My bloody boat go's were it wants, it costs me a fortune to maintain and it is very difficult to handle, that why she's a she
