Do you think Scotland makes more of a big deal about new year then England does?
Answers:
Yeah and for a country smaller than England it is seen as the best place to be for New Years. I used to live in Newcastle and is an hour and a half away and yet never made the most of it. I live in London now and I find that New Years is treated like any other day except with fireworks. Yet every year somebody complains about the cost of the fireworks and the environment and yet we are being over shadowed by New York and Sydney!
Yes without doubt - Hogmanay is their thing - more important than Christmas to them and good luck to them - its a fantastic party time in Scotland xxx
no, to me they seem the same, new years day is celabrated in london and the same in edinburgh.
i think they do , i think they make a lot more of it than they do about christmas or any other holiday i dont know why though.
Absolutely, Edinburgh has the best party in the whole world its fantastic, the scots love new year.
yes, because in scotland life is so grim that they cant wait to get the old year out of the way and start again.
Yes because us scots are party animals!! ;)
It will depend on the Celtic vs. Manchester United game today!
The Scots know how to Party, lot's of people travel there just for the party atmosphere,
I say Let the Scots enjoy themselves, we're all entitled to go crazy every now and then, besides, New Year only happens at the end of the year, so its something to look forward too!
Scotland celebrates Hogmanay, we see the new year in, not the old year out so the party starts properly at midnight. Yes its a big deal to us, and we make the most of it. Scotland is renowned for being able to enjoy any celebration and event, so come and visit.
Hogmany has always been a much bigger celibration up here. We have the 1st and the 2nd as public holidays!
I remember my mum telling me when she was wee her dad worked every christmas, as did lots of manual workers, but was alway of the new year!
Its all down to knowing how to party!
BORE OFF !!
First of all, in Scotland, Hogmanay is the time when we bid farewell to the Old Year and welcome in the New Year.
Traditionally, Hogmanay is THE occasion of the year that Scotland celebrates; as a nation, with family, with friends, with people you may never see again!
It is an occasion to party with your family and to visit anybody and everybody - we call it first-footing.
On the first Hogmanay when I came to live in rural Ayrshire, we started with a party in the house from about 7pm on New Year's Eve, welcoming guests who came and went. Some we knew, many we did not. After the bells, we went out to one party after another around the area. I remember walking back home across the fields well after 5am!
The same year, a friend of mine was on the island of Mull. There, the parties started slightly earlier than ours, but continued well into the early hours of the 2nd!
You must also remember that prior to 1975, Boxing Day was a normal working day in some parts of Scotland, for example rural southern Lanarkshire. With January 1st becoming a national holiday in England & Wales, Scotland got the 2nd as compensation.
