Has anyone been to Athens?
what do you think? i am going there soon.
Answers:
Athens is great! Must-sees are Acropolis and the Archaeological museum. Most people stay in Plaka when they visit, and Plaka is OK this time of the year, but also very touristy and expensive. It is better to stay in an area nearby, such as Thissio. In Thissio you will also be near the happy night life in Gazi and Psyrri. Visit one of the parks, like Filopappo, and watch the sunset from Lykavittus Hill. If you're going for shopping, don't shop in the expensive shops at Ermou or Plaka, but walk for instance up and down 28. October avenue, the street passing the Archaeological museum. Great shops!
The food is not lousy, as someone said, but don't eat in Plaka and avoid touristy eateries. Eat like the Greeks, with lots of meze (like tapas) for starters - or maybe for the whole meal.
Enjoy your stay!
Only spent about a day we were cruising but I would like to go back. The food was great
Its fantastic. Loads of character, cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs - real people. Really cosmopolitan. Just chill. Not good in a heat wave tho but hopefully you'll avoid that.
i know someone who has took a cruse around Greece, he said it was amazing there.
yeah loads of times, need i say more
Athens is a great city. I stayed in Plaka which is right in the heart of the city walking distance to the Parthenon. You can find some cheap hostels/hotels there. Easy to get to from the airport taking the bus. Plaka has great greek restaurants and bars and is a safe area to walk around in at night. You only need 2 or 3 days in Athens. I also visited Mykonos (one of the Greek islands) which of course is now closed for the season. Below is a link to a detailed map of Athens.
