Teaching placement in China?

I'm thinking about booking a 3 or 6 month placement as a volunteer English teacher in China with gapyearforgrownups.com. Can anyone give details of good or bad experiences with them? Are they any good? Thanks.

Just came back from China on a holiday. Boy! They're really into learning languages especially English. Why are you going as a volunteer, you would certainly get a job teaching English as there are so many who want to learn and they are not poor either.
The JET programme are always looking for people .Ive heard of noting but great experiences from his placement .My friend lived in china for 2 years , She said she was reated like royalty .She had a driver and a great apartment.they are really eager to learn and you often get extra jobs like giving tution and stuff! Its all good.If you dont want to go that far away go somehere like spain to teach!
They are now looking for somebody who has teacher's degree. You can make a lot of money by doing that. Why volunteer? even better, stay in Japan, you could make $40 per hours as well. In China, they usually pay $25 per hour thou. -- tax free! ha, sorry for IRS.
So you are going to volunteer for a service that will make you teach English in China for free? Other people just work there instead. I don't know anything about gapyearforgrownups, but many people who talk about working in China teaching English talk about the terrible job market for teachers--broken contracts, inconsistent pay, huge disinterested classes, etc. Now, while all these things don't concern you, I have the feeling that you are filling the gap that someone else would not take. This is what I envision: the company arranges for you to teach in a junior high where there are 60 7th-graders in the room, sleeping, hitting each other, begin generally obnoxious and bad-mouthing you in Chinese. The company takes the money for providing a teacher for the brats, while you take.experience. Uh, that sounds like a good racket.

I've heard JET is pretty good, but that comment about having a driver really threw me off--why go to China and live like a speical person? Not really "experiencing China" is it?

If you are thinking about taking a year or two to figure out what you want to do or see Asia, take a job teaching in Korea, Japan, or Taiwan. There is lots of discussion about which one is best, but I get the idea that things go much more smoothly in Taiwan and Japan, though foreigners are not welcomed as much in Japan as they are in Taiwan (and maybe Korea).

I don't want to rain on your parade, I just think that--unless you get stationed WAY OUT west in China--you are probably being used to make money, working next to someone who does the same job and gets paid to do it.
a volunteer?man,you rock!come to Jiangsu!ppl are crazy about learning English here,you'll be treated like a king I swear.but Taiwan is a good choice I'm sure,I like Taiwan
