What do I bring ? How cold will in be in Edinburgh in December ?

I live in Texas - and December here is warm (31-35 C) and humid - I am coming over for a wedding.. Everyone says - it will be cold and wet - but - really ?? ( I hope so - I hate the heat here !) Do I need a great coat and raincoat ? Help ! I have no winter clothes !

Answers:
It'll be cold. Usually at the start of December it's around 6 to 10 degrees. But around Christmas it can be below zero. One year it was minus 18, but that was an exception.
Bring a hat, gloves, scarf, boots and lots of warm layers
Bu it is beautiful
It probably will be cold and wet. I was there in May and it was still chilly and rainy.
very very cold. you need to bring money.
Pretend you're going to Canada in their winter, that's about what you can expect.

That said, I advise some light summer clothes also.

You never know!!

Siht girl. come naked! Who cares as long as you have a good time.
it's windy and rainy, you'll see very little snow, but maybe ice. it usually doesn't get too far below freezing, and most days will be about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. i lived there for a while. DON'T bother with an umbrella, it WILL break! it's super fun there though because there's an awesome christmas market downtown with free apple wine that's hot and tasty and many neat crafts. you'll have fun.
All you can say with certainty is that the temperature will not exceed 10 degrees C ( 50 fahrenheit)

It's not the cold that will get to you, it's the damp. To you, everything will feel damp and miserable at that time of year. And dont' forget it's only daylight between about 8 am and 4 pm at that time of year.

People don't really spend much time out of doors though. Personally I think all you'd need to do would be to bring some cottton t-shirts that you can wear under your everyday clothes as an extra layer. If you need anything extra it's readily available in the "shops" although the prices are scary.

Hey I thought Texans were tough?
Well, if you are used to warmer weather, you should probably bring a much warmer coat than a raincoat. The average temperature during the day in December in Edinburgh is 44F during the day and about 33F at night - below is a link to the average monthly temperatures for Edinburgh.

So, it looks like you'll want to bring a good warm coat (perhaps with a removable lining in case the weather does get warmer on some days), boots (nice flat heeled boots are great cause you can walk easily on all the cobblestoned streets in Edinburgh no matter the weather), gloves, and a small wool hat. I wouldn't bring a scarf, cause you will be able to buy some terrific ones there, which will be a great souvenir.
Yes absolutely! - BOTH. you wear one while t'other is drying out. You'll also need a number of woolen jumpers, scarves and at least one pair of waterproof boots (either ankle, knee-length or wellies - whichever).
The wind can be very cold.so windproof layer is good.
But keep layers many and thin, then you can adapt to whatever nature brings! Thin gloves, and light compressible hat would also be good. And, of course, a light packable waterproof.
Small is good, because if the sun chooses to shine, you will need to strip off a little, a stuff ae they cosy things in your pockets, or wee a bag.
It is unlikely to snow, so just ordinary shoes will be OK.
It is a beautiful city. I am sure you will enjoy yourself.
It will probably be snowing. You will need a warm coat, boots, gloves & a hat.
The best thing is probably to wear layers of clothing so that you can remove or add them as required.
I live not far from edinburgh and you will definitely need a warm winter coat, boots, gloves and scarf.it can get very cold in december, not as cold as canada though as someone else said!it will probably be raining or frosty and snowy.even if the day is sunny it will be frosty.the wind can be quite fierce.wrap up well and enjoy yourself.if maybe cold but scotland is very beautiful.
I have just got back from Edinburgh and it rained constantly, it was also quite chilly, so I think it will be freezing in December, I live in the north of england and its cold in december. But the rain didnt put me off, I think Edinburgh is a great city, I really enjoyed myself while I was there!
hi, Edinburgh is a pretty cold place, especially in winter for your stay here i would advise you to wear jeans and bring some warm wolly jumpers if you dont own any then you can pick them up relatively cheaply in many of the shops in Edinburgh its a big city so you wont be in too much trouble if you dnt bring enough clothes. id also advise you to wear sensible shoes as many of the streets are cobbled and uphill which high heel glamour shoes can often catch in and kill your feet so beware.

for the wedding ul probably be indoors mostly so u shouldnt need a coat that much but wear a warm cardigan or something to match ur outfit and be sure to bring an umbrella as it is very often wet.

have a great time
I have lived in many areas of the UK and was fortunate enough to spend 9 months in wonderful Edinburgh. Edinburgh doesn't have that much rain, however it gets extremely cold, in fact it's the coldest place I've ever been, I can recall on several occassions walking there and feeling the freezing air hitting the back of my chest. You need a really thick, warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves, I wouldn't bother carrying a raincoat, just take an umbrella. I am sure you will love this vibrant city.
I would say YES! Having lived in Edinburgh for four years whilst studying I would say you would need a winter coat and rainproof wear. The weather is very changable so layers of clothes is advisable would also recommend comfortable shoes as Edinburgh is hilly and a number of streets have retained their beautiful cobbles!
Hope you have a great time it's such a special place!
:-)
The temperature will be between -5C and 10C depending on whether there is a cold spell or not. It will also be wet so bring a rain coat AND a winter coat just in case. Have a great time :-)
