Why is it so expensive in England?
Answers:
Compared to what? It depends what you're buying and where you're buying it. In some cases, tax is excessive - the tax on fuel being a particular example, but not everything is stupidly expensive.
Oh, and VAT stands for Value Added Tax, not Voluntary - it's a tax on items that are defined as luxuries by some archaic government legislation.
Everything is taxed to the hilt.
What is so expensive ?
I just got a great meal for 2 quid.
We keep so many people who can't handle money.
Called the Labour Party
Compared with where else?
This is a relativity question or maybe its rhetorical and why am I amswering?
Give us a clue, at least. What's expensive? Don't answer "everything", cos I live in England and you don't have to pay out a fortune for stuff
Because we are all posh..
God knows. We're a nation of complete idiots. Christ alive I hate me! oh God i'd throw myself under a train but my Oyster needs charging and its so effing expensive! Curse you the Queen!
Its not just the Labour party its whoever is in power, they put all sorts of taxes on your products & us being British just take it on the chin without so much as a whimper
Cos whatever government that is in power thinks the only way to pay for their #ock-ups is to tax the working man.
that is rubbish, it is no different to anywhere else. You presumably come from a "developing country" on a starvation diet
Expensive compared to where?
But generally, you can blame free market economics and profiteering.
Not everything is expensive. It does depend where,or what part of England you go to. London is very expensive purely because its the Capital and has lots of tourists.Other tourists places are also expensive. This is the "rip of side" of England ! Other "normal "places in England, are not really expensive. Its a case of "shopping around". Seek and ye shall find..a bargain!!!
England buys oil at a cheaper rate than America , it's just that the English government add about 200% Tax before allowing it to be sold to the public .
This is the arrangement for almost everything that can be bought in Britain .
The laughable thing about it is , they call this charge V,A,T which stands for voluntary added tax .
The voluntary bit amuses me because i assume it means that you don't have to live if you don't want to so you can choose not to pay if you want .
I could go to America and buy a car for $25,000 and have it shipped to the UK for say $5000 BUT when it arrives i must pay the British government another $30,000 just to make it legal .
Now I'm sure that makes sense to you ! ? !
Private higher education is not so expensive when compereing to USA.
Blair and Brown have increased taxes so much and continually rip us off to pay for all the immigrants
We are an island. We longer make a lot of things we use
they come in by transport. Transport is expensive.
Our VAt is one of highest in the EU at 17.5% against

Petrol/Diesel is 80% tax
Another reason is certain large business who are very
greedy and overcharge for services which just get added
to your end bill whatever you buy or service you use.
Our post prices are also higher than a lot of other places
in the EU again, petrol tax is part of the price, which is
re-couped from the end consumer.
This may sound a very poltical answer but it very the bare
