What are the best stopover places from Britain to Australia?
I have been to Singapore and Hong kong and I loved them both in their own way but want some where different for my trip next March and return in April.
I only began to travel a few years ago and I am in my "middle years" now and I am trying to "catch up" on every where I could have gone when younger!!, I like hostels rather than hotels, prefering to spend money on activities rather than accommodation. Ideas welcome.

Dont fly via asia, you can go there any time, but how often do you get the chance to go to somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. This is one of those chances so take it.
Fly via the US or Canada and stop of on the west coast just to break the journey up if you want to. Then, depending on your route you can stop in Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, etc etc.
SPAIN
Well as ALL flights stop in Los Angeles to refuel from Heathrow to Australia, I would suggest Los Angeles.
Go and see Disneyland or something, since you are already in LA anyway, of course there are all the movie studio tours and stuff, Universal Studio's is probably the best.
Then again there is Hollywood and Beverly hills and of course shopping on Rodeo Drive, since you have to sop in LA Anyway, Why not!
I may have the opportunity to go to Australia myself either around the New Year or towards Easter.never been before and am a bit of a novice traveller, but the air-fares are ridiculous and I'm a pov-case student. Cheeky I know but you wouldn't have some tips you could share to cut the travel costs down?
Iraq
Thailand is lovely
I've done this journey via bahrain and singapore. I stopped off and stayed a few days in singapore, it was brilliant. A friend of mine stopped off in Ban kok and had a week there staying a few nights there and onto puket. He loved it. I envy u. I loved Aus. Have a great time. Got any room in yr suitcase..lol
The Philippines, it's cheap, beautiful (outside the main cities) and very friendly, not at all dangerous unless you want to go to the Jolo island group way down south.
Bad press is something that plagues this country, mostly because the National press is so drama hungry, but the foreign press corps picks these stories up and pushes them around the world. I've lived here for 14 years and have never had a problem, not even when sailing around the islands with my yacht.
Don't believe what you read, pass by this country and see for yourself.
Kuala Lumpur is excellent. I stayed in a luxury hotel for £20 per night (king sized bed, en suite etc), although you can stay in an absolute hovel of a hostel for around £2 per night. £2-3 buys you a cooked meal in a restaurant, 50p a coffee, £7 an hour long massage.
Go to the Batu Caves as they are well worth seeing and again cost hardly anything. I only spent one full day there and I plan to spend 3 or 4 days there when I next journey downunder.
Have a fantastic trip wherever you go.
Mauritius is a wonderful place for a stop over, as is South Africa, especially Cape Town.
If you fly to OZ the western route, you can stop in Los angeles or Hawaii en route.
I'd suggest Japan.
Obviously a teeny bit longer flying time than via Singapore or HK but you can get some cheap flights going that way back to Australia.
And it's worth it for the experience.
Hong Kong.
My picks would be:
via Far East: Dubai (Airport Meridien Hotel) and Singapore (Phoenix Hotel). All on Emirates, and breaks the journey up nicely into 3 flights of around 7 hours or less. Emirates now flies to Perth as well as Melbourne and Sydney.
Via America: Suggest Fiji (outrigger Reef Hotel) and Los Angeles (Airport Hilton).
OR over the Pole to Sydney via Tokyo. Jal used to offer free Tokyo stopover but not sure if they still do.
we stopped over in hawaii on the way over which was lovely and on the way back we went via fiji and i would go back to both places as they were great
Sounds like you like Asia, so why not try stopping over in Bangkok and then have yourself a bit of a journey. Go from Thailand to Cambodia, up through Laos then back to Bangkok, all in about 3 or 4 weeks (for an ok look), then continue on your way to Oz.
Else you could go via KL and enjoy some time in Malaysia, easy enough to journey up one coast and back down the other.
Both ideas give you loads of opportunity to see many historical places, enjoy the fabulous food, and learn about the cultures, oh and plenty of cheap accommodation along the way.
Enjoy, no doubt you will :-]
If you go the other way you could go via the USA and stop off at Los Angeles. Cheap when you are there as the dollar is high against the pond at the moment. You could then have another stopover in Fiji or NZ - both good places. Going the otherway, Dubai is an option but not particulary a cheap one.
have a lovely time
I've done stop offs on this route via HK, Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai and Tokyo (depends on which airline I've flown..)
I think that Bangkok would be good for your next try. I'm going back there next month, on my way over to Sydney, and spending some time doing an overland trip to Cambodia too (with these folks http://www.geckosadventures.co.uk/sth_ea. I'm in my 30s, and was looking not to just wander off on my own.
Going Eastwards I'd recommend Dubai, Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore. Either one of these is great. Next time i go, I'm planning on stopping off in Japan as my daughter would love to go there. If You can break your journey up into 3 legs its well worth it and you wont get so tired.
Thailand and Japan are winners. Japan Airlines (and no I am not affiliated in any way ;) ) also do good deals on flights and stop overs.
Thailand is great but a little over touristed for my liking nowadays. For backpacking though Thailand is better than Japan. Japan is expensive!
