Whats the minimum distance that planes can pass before its called a near miss?
When you see other planes out of your window seat, how near are they and whats the minimum distance they can be before its classed as a near miss?
Answers:
The closest they can be is 1000 feet, recently changed from 2000 feet because of air traffic congestion. As for what constitutes a near miss, I suppose you would know if you were involved in one.
It depends on the size of the planes. But on most civil planes they are expected to keep a horizontal distance of atleast 3 miles and a vertical distance of a 1000 feet.
I think this is right?
Captains decision - any close encounter can be reported to the authority if the commanding office deems the proximity of another aircraft or indeed another body could have endangered the safety of his flight.
Personally I think a near miss, is a hit!
