20 years on, why is the M25 still the most talked about road in the UK?

Answers:
because its the most used in england
Because when they built it, they didn't think it would turn out to be the countries biggest car park.
because it is the worst thing that the uk have ever thought up! its a death trap!
Three reasons

1. It is notorious for very bad traffic jams due to the impossible volume of traffic it has to accomodate.

2. The road manners of most people who use it are none existant so it leaves a lasting bad impression.

2. It goes round London which most people who live in the south east think is the centre of the universe. Personally I think it's the are$ehole of the UK : )
Cos its the "Road From Hell " . i spent 11 hours driving from Cornwall to Essex.! .. 4 of them on the M25 ( M3 junction ) to The QE2 Bridge.! .. and i ran out of smokes , so was getting well pissed off ..! . Nuff Said.
Because the morons who planned the M25, instead of allowing only other motorways and major trunk roads to have junctions to the motorway, let country road and B road traffic gain access/egress, too.
So all the Joe Bloggs's, who could easily use minor roads for their 6 mile daily commutes, use the M25 instead, thereby slowing up traffic and generally causing those unfathomable jams which occur all the time - especially mornings and evenings.

If the authorities simply closed off all the non M'way/Trunk road junctions, the M25 would suddenly become a lot less crowded and a lot more free flowing - and easier to police, too.

However, such a simple and inexpensive suggestion would not be considered by so-called 'planners'. But if the jams were to disappear, or at least become much reduced, the M25 would not be talked about so much.
it was never intended to be used the way it is. the problem is to many junctions and too many people using it to go 1 or 2 junctions
Its an interesting question, the m25 is 121 miles long and has 32 junctions so as many people have mentioned it has on average a junction every 4 miles.
It is not the busiest road in the UK that dubious honour goes to the m6 around birmingham, the m6 also has the worst and most prolific traffic jams.
When the m25 was planned it was supposed to be one of 3 orbital roads around london, it was the middle one with a further road around 10 miles further inland and one aournd 20 miles outside that.

Of course they did not have the will or supposedly the money to build the outer ring road either so we are left with one.

The m25 is the only uk motorway with a toll in the middle, this is a huge frustration for drivers as this by itself causes hours of delays and hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon to be released into the atmosphere each year for no other purpose than making money. Madness, Madness, Madness so much for Tony Blairs green credentials.
