Can you still safely drive from Europe to India? My friend did it 5 years ago via Iran and loved it.?
Im thinking of doing this within the next two years. I feel confident that we could drive from the UK to Turkey. But, after that point, I feel that we may have to ditch the van and fly the rest of the journey?
Answers:
Apart from the obvious difficulties, there is one thing which stops most people. Cost.
A lot of countries further east than Turkey (and South) insist that you have a document called a 'Carnet de Passage'. This document is a 'guarantee' that says you will *certainly* export your vehicle. In the event that you have a breakdown or accident, it can be very costly to get your vehicle out of the country (and then into the next one who will say the same thing).
To get a Carnet de passage, you need to put your house up as suretee. Ie. You provide a financial instituation a guarantee of upto (for example) £200,000 - which is what it might cost to drag a piece of mangled metal from the centre of a desert and back home.
The reason that they insist on a Carnet is because people have a habit of driving a Range Rover or other 4x4 to these countries and selling them on the black market for a mint (and thereby avoid taxes).
Unless you're seriously rich, reckless and suicidal - these places are best avoided.
as long as you are not Bush then it's still fine
Yes, I would recommend Iran as a really good place to drive through. By the way, my Enron shares aren't doing too well and my Sony Betamax machine is on the blink. I sometimes wish I'd never left DeLorean or let Nick Leeson invest my savings.
Seriously, I wouldn't recommend it at present. The Bush administration have been hinting at invading or bombing Iran.
first off, if your traveling in a van, its not safe to go anywhere, for vans are the epitome of suck.also , wouldnt traveling from europe to india be the equivalent of going to the moon and back on a bicycle 10 times?
anyways, if you really do wish to kill your butt from driving that far, at least drive a Porsche, a ferrari or something less suck than a van
This is , what clieints of you agency did this year.
I think, this can help you a little bit.

geographically it is possible.
however, consider the following :
which side of India will you enter from? India - Pakistan border is not only very strictly protected - but large parts are either hills or dessert. there is a 'bus route' though which very highly guarded. you might want to make inquiries about this
most countries on the way are plagued by war and uncertainity
i would recommend flying !
That would just be wonderful and great. I am willing to join you. I feel it is quite safe.
As soon as you are in the indian border its safe but i don't have any idea when you are about europe
IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT DRIVING THROUGH IRAN
