Can anyone recommend somewhere nice in the UK for a weekend break?
And where I might be able to find a good deal?!
Answers:
Bath is lovely. Roman Baths are a really nice place to visit and there are some nice shops/restaurants there.
Brighton.
Oban in Scotland, beautiful!
Anywhere in Cornwall! Tintagel and Boscastle are at the top of the county and fairly easy to reach from the motorway but if you want to go a bit further try Mousehole and Marazion. Newquay and the Eden project are good as well. If we knew where you were starting out from it would be better though!
the Cotswolds are great any time of the year
Have to agree Oban , or Pitlochry in Scotland, Edinburgh .
Liverpool. The Beatles Museum, great night life, Goodison Park, Museums, Art Galleries, great night life, friendly people, great night life. Ring up Liverpool Tourism Centre, I do not have the number.
Lake District - cliched but stunning whether you've got the energy to trek up mountains or not. Train to Oxenholme from Euston roughly 70 quid return, then train to Windermere where you'll find B&Bs. In the town centre won't be cheap though.
If you're driving, expect at least 5 hours up the M6 but then at least you can stay slightly away from the tourist hotspots (Kendal?) and get the accomodation costs down a bit. You can always take a tent!!
West Wales, the Pembrokeshire coast. Sea and scenery, lots of good bars & restaurants, lots of good walks and fresh air oh, and cheap!
How about Northern Ireland? You could even go to the Republic, it's not far. And it's a beautiful country, with plenty of things to see and do.
York, it has everything!
You can spend you time in the history of the place, just take a walk down the Shambles and all those Castles, etc.
What about shopping? More than you'll ever need right on your doorstep with loads of small shops as well as the big names.
Fantastic nightlife, clubs, bars, etc or you can sit in a quite pub overlooking the river.
National train museum is massive and many other museum, the Jorvik centre will teach you all about the Vikings.
There's a Novotel just on the end of the city centre with a great restaurant, it's reasonable to stay there and you can leave your car parked up because everything is walking distance.
I've been many times with various girlfriends as it can be a great romantic getaway, it's easy to get to even including the train or bus.
York really does have it all.
lake district is great
canterbury, went there last week, lovely place, so tidy, lots of places to visit, we stayed at a "travel lodge", it was only £51 a night,
Dulverton, Somerset. (Exmoor National Park)
Lion Hotel, Ashwick Hotel, Tarr Farm at Tarr Steps.(My favourites)
Plenty of B&Bs.
Northumberland ( Englands best kept secret)
Depends on where you live and how far you want to travel my ideas are
norwich lake district sherwood forrest stratford upon avon devon cornwall new forest isle of wight
Whitstable (near Canterbury in Kent) is very fashionable with Londoners on a weekend break right now. In my view it's a bit expensive and would recommend Faversham instead - brewery tours, excellent connections to motorway and train networks, 5 minutes from the seaside.
Brighton - fantastic but can be pricey.
laterooms.com is great for finding availability - the site a bit messy and you often have to phone them at the end of the process but best for finding prices.
(I've also gone direct to hotel after finding availability on here - and it's been cheaper - other times its the other way around).
Exeters nice. Poole and Bournemouth are too and Oxford.
Brighton:
Charming and 'romantic' Old Laines
Boho-chic in the North Laines and many independent shops
Cosmopolitan Preston Street with restaurants from 12 countries
Designer shopping/sophisticated dining at the Marina Village
The world-famous Brighton Pier
Peaceful, village-like Kemptown
Seafront strolls (esp good on a Sunday morning)
Buzzing nightlife
A thriving restaurant and cafe culture
Friendly local people
Fun in quality urban parks (Preston Park, Queens Park)
Browse round the genius found in the Artists Quarter (seafront)
Salubrious sea air
Fun, welcoming pubs
Interesting, occasionably offbeat art galleries
Eccentricity and quirkiness all round
Cheaper than people say
Close to London - very good transport links
Brighton is a year round destination, but the best times for a weekend away are May (during the month-long festival) the height of summer, early autumn and in the run up to Christmas. Found out where you want to go, and what you want to do, then hop on a train and take yourself there. It's a very memorable destination.
