I recently booked a flight to china for jan 24th but had to cancel. the flight was 342 quid( which was pretty cheap really) but I only got £180 back. is this the biggest rip-off or what?

Ripoff but Its in the small print..
did you take out insurence when you got the ticket, some people lose all the money
If you are not sure if you are going to travel either get insurance on it or make sure you are getting a refundable ticket. (refundable tickets can only be bought directly from the airline I believe) You will pay more for it, so you'd have to decide if its worth it.
From an airline's point of view: you were taking up a seat that other people might have wanted, they still had to pay people to process the ticket you bought.
If you had a really good reason to cancel such as illness, death in the family etc. you might have been able to get the full fare back. Usually that depends on who you talk to in the airline. Or you could have kept that credit towards another ticket, but you still would have lost some of it in fees.
why did you have to cancel? it depends on that.
The cancellation policy is right there in when you buy the ticket. If you weren't sure that you were going to travel, then you should have bought a refundable class or purchased travel insurance. Yes, the fees suck, but it allows carriers to keep the cost for other passengers lower.
