Dad's holiday idea going 2 work? Wants 2 drive from San Francisco 2 Vancouver in 3 1/2 weeks + stop places 2.
He thinks that next year we could do that, flying to San Francisco from London then staying a few days and driving in a hire car to Vancouver where we would also stay a few days. We would fly back from Vancouver. He thinks it would be 3000 km driving because he tried to measure the map with a little map measuring wheel. I think he said Km and not miles. Problems? Pitfalls? Good or bad Idea? Compleatly unworkable?
He is a good driver and so is mum so they think they could do it with overnight stops along the way. They drove all over Canada earlier this year.

excellent idea, but depends on the time of year
don't want to be doing it in late summer when there may be forest fires to detour aroun
don't want to be doing it when there may be unpredictable weather off the Pacific
check with American and Canadian weather services to see best travel times
absolutely beautiful part of the world with great highways and grade A infrastructure; you'll have a great time
and when you head over the border on the way to Vancouver, welcome to Canada, eh!
Completely doable! I know it's not 3000 miles so he must have said km. There is a lot of great stuff along the way.
One thing that might potentially be problematic - there is this part between California and Oregon on the interstate 5 freeway called "the pass" (I'm sure there's a more technical name for it but I don't know what it is, everyone just calls it the pass) and in the winter sometimes it gets very snowy and difficult or impossible to travel. Just check the weather before you go. I'm sure anyway in the Shasta Lake area would know the conditions of the pass in the winter. Oh yeah, it extends from about Shasta Lake in CA to Ashland in Oregon.
You should definitely stop in Portland, Oregon, and in Seattle. GREAT cities and they are right off the main freeway (the 5). I think it would be a fun trip. then again I do'nt know how old you are. When I was in junior high my parents made us take a month long trip across the US. it was not very enjoyable because I didn't want to spend that much time in a van with my whole family!! But in terms of logistics, it's actually a really good idea.
