Try BMI, they have flights from Manchester to many cities in the country, via Chicago. And if you fly from Heathrow fly BA or United. AVOID AMERICAN!
Expedia, airlinenetwork.co.uk etc are all good, but to be honest, most of the airlines have price guarantees on their sites now which makes it as easy and cost effective to buy direct from the airlines..take a look at BA, Virgin, KLM etc.
