Where can I volunteer in Africa?
I want to spend some weeks or months volunteering in third-world countries but have no idea where to start. Anyone got previous experience of this sort of thing? Would very much appreciate some help.

That is such a big question! I know you've no idea where to start but you really need to think about what you actually want to do, eg Teaching / training? Conservation? Animals? Community? Health / medical?
I dont even know what nationality you are but if you are British, there was a fantastic article in the Travel section of the Daily Telegraph (Saturday, August 19 2006) - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/index.. about gap year experiences, the best bit being a low down of nearly every operator in the sector, with contact details including websites - a great place to start.
If you can't find it online, I'll even photocopy it and send it to you, out of the goodness of my own heart!
Alternatively, there are several online resources, including:
http://www.do-it.org.uk/youthnet/jsp/pol.
http://www.connexions-direct.com/index.c.
Additionally, tour companies that normally cater for overland independent travellers, are starting to incorporate short stints of volunteering into their schedules.
Depending on how much time you have left before you want to depart, I'd fully recommend Raleigh International http://www.raleighinternational.org.uk. - this is a youth development charity specialising in community / conservation / adventure projects in 1 of 4 destinations at present: Ghana, Namibia, Costa Rica / Nicaragua & Malaysia.
4, 7 and 11 week expeditions are available for which you are required to fundraise different amounts (although you could just pay for it, if you're short of time/feeling lazy!) once you have attended an introduction weekend. Participants must be 17-25, able to speak English and swim. Volunteer staff vacanacies are also available (25+). Support groups are dotted around the UK to help participants raise their funds or just help them out with kit lists etc, including my group in Oxford! I myself went to Siberia back in 1993 and had an absolutely fantastic time!
If anybody would like further information on Raleigh, please don't hesitate to email me or call Raleigh HQ on 020 7371 8585
Try http://www.vso.org.uk/
(Voluntary Service Overseas)
I think they have local offices dotted around so there's probably one near you.
You could try a church organisation, they send people out every so often.
My opinion is go to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They REALLY need some helping hands.
Try Save the Children or Christian Aid
Check out link below. They arrange teaching and projects abroad and have a great reputation.I know quite a few people who have used them in the past. Although it can be a bit pricey.

Failing that try contacting charities.
And of course VSO
(although I think you have to train and stay with them for two years.might have changed that tho!)
I was in South Africa for three months but not a volunteer experience but I went to visit some family that i have there. I was also interested in volunteering fo some sort not just in Africa. But you can check some of the travel agencies and see if they have any kind of vounteer programs. It your a student maybe they have student programs available. Or just check your local community center.
If you find out anymore e-mail me at sumayo18@yahoo.ca. I'd also like to know more as well.
VSO. The more experience you have for a particular area you want to go to the better.
If you're Catholic, try Somalia. A nun was shot there last week, so there should be a vacancy.
Just kidding. But if you go you'll learn a lot. Especially that it's very different.
The Internet is the place to look, but i can not remember the address, sorry! But be prepared as most of volunteer abroad placements you have to pay for it yourself, its very expensive.
The post office has a booklet on volunteering abroad, again i can not remember the name of it,sorry.I haven't been much, but I'm sort of pointing you in right direction.if you do find anything let me know, please.Good luck
