Has anyone visited the Falkirk Wheel (Scotland ) and what did you think of it?
Can it be compared to Foxten Locks in Rutland?
Answers:
It is like nothing you have ever seen, that's for sure. This object is somewhat controversial because not EVERYONE sees it as a good use of taxpayer's money! And the original canal builders had already constructed a series of locks there, so why didn't they just renovate the locks.
In many ways it is like the Scottish Parliament building- Stunning, daring, modern and a shocking waste of money. And - somewhat notoriously- the MANY council employees who are employed on the wheel are all relatives of people on the council!!
In the summer, boats get filled up with sightseers who go to the top of the wheel. Then they come back down again.. It's hard to see the attraction, frankly. But there's no doubt that it is an impressive sight although it makes many people's blood boil!!
If you have never seen it, it is probably worth a look . But the surrounding area is bleak, bleak industrial wasteland. I'm sure they have webcams on it- why not take a look on Google for them?
It's a good bit of engineering. If you have a couple of hours to kill, it's worth going. If you're pushed for time, there are better things to visit.
